Ghana, EU Strike USD57.9M Defense Deal
Under the terms of the agreement, the EU committed to supplying military hardware — including drones, vehicles, and motorcycles — to strengthen Ghana's operational security capabilities on the ground.
The accord was signed by Ghanaian Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and visiting EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and European Commission Vice President Kaja Kallas. The agreement establishes a comprehensive collaboration blueprint spanning counter-terrorism, conflict prevention, cybersecurity, border management, maritime security — with particular focus on the Gulf of Guinea — and broader peace operations.
Opoku-Agyemang underscored the depth of the existing partnership, noting that Ghana is currently executing no fewer than 30 EU-backed security initiatives across the domains of conflict resolution, counter-terrorism, and cybersecurity.
Kallas, in turn, quantified the bloc's cumulative commitment to Ghana's security architecture, confirming that the EU has delivered approximately 57.9 million U.S. dollars in security assistance to the country since 2023 — encompassing both military equipment and training support.
The signing arrives at a critical juncture, as instability continues to spill southward from the Sahel into West Africa's coastal states, placing nations like Ghana under mounting pressure to harden their defenses against the advancing threat of armed extremism.
